How to Change the Position of Control Buttons in Ubuntu
As you know that in windows the control button like maximize, minimize and close are at right side of window but in ubuntu these are at left side, so today i will show you a small trick to take these buttons to right.

Follow my steps:
1. Press Alt+F2 to bring up “Run Application” window.
2. Now, Type gconf-editor into the box like this:
3. Click “Run” to bring up Configuration Editor in front of you.
4. Browse to apps > metacity > general, look for “button_layout” on the right panel.
5. Change the value in the “button_layout”
from close,minimize,maximize:
to menu:minimize, maximize, close and press the Enter key.
You are done, and you will see that now buttons are at right.

Or simply switch to another distro. I now use LinuxMint. If the Ubuntu guys had the decency of offering the choice to place the control buttons in the Appearance form when you select the theme. I would probably still stay with Ubuntu.

You can also use the same method to put the buttons back on the left – especially since many gnome/unity themes put the buttons on the right (The colon : seems to be the dividing mark).
It took me just a few days to get used to the buttons on the left; and now I much prefer it- I even changed the buttons to the left in KDE.
For me, the buttons on the left works better from a usability perspective, since that is also where the application menus are, and on large screens/dual monitors it’s a long way to move the mouse over to the right
Still; I think everyone should be able to choose their own preference more-easily. How hard would it be to add a right-click option: ‘switch buttons right/left’?

Tony, Well for new users at right it would be more easy then at left.

When they are on the left it becomes just a bit too easy to wiggle the mouse a bit too far up and accidentally kill “x” the application when you were merely trying to select the “file” menu to perform a file operation. I had done this several times and was annoyed. This is the main reason I do not like them on the left.
I was previously choosing themes, such as “Clearlooks” that had buttons defaulted on the right, but now I can adjust them over to the right on any theme.
Thanks for the tip!

I was surprised too when the Ubuntu buttons moved .. but I’ve found it’s actually less ‘mousing around’ when the buttons are on the left.
I run several Virtual Machines and servers and remote desktop into all of those. Some screens are different sizes than my client, so anything with controls not in the upper left make for increased scrolling. Window controls on upper right, menu icons on lower left, minimized program icons on the bottom bar; all require scrolling.
So now I pack the top bar and upper left with controls where I can make changes.
